Conference Presentation: Illinois as Slaveholding Borderland

I will be presenting a paper entitled "Between Slavery and Freedom: Illinois as Slaveholding Borderland" as part of a panel on "New Directions in the Study of Slavery and Anti-Slavery in Illinois" at the Conference on Illinois History, September 30, 2011. I also served as organizer of the panel, which includes Adam Rowe's work on the use of republican rhetoric in the slavery debates of 1823-1824, and is moderated by Professor James Simeone of Illinois Wesleyan University, author of The Bottomland Republic: Democracy and Slavery in Frontier Illinois (NIU Press, 2000).
